Cinestill 800 Film Model Shoot

Today's post is about my recent Cinestill 800 film model shoot. Cinestill is a unique film that is known to produce wild and unpredictable colors. Especially at night. People seem to love posting night time photos of gas stations with Cinestill for some reason but they typically don't use it for portraits. So keeping the outlier vibe we set out to shoot a few rolls of medium format portraits in downtown Appleton. The photo above highlights just how trippy the colors can be with this film. The fountain was red but came out a glowing pink and the water turned…

Dani and Cole Model Shoot

I met up with Dani and Cole in the North Woods of Wisconsin. After we captured our main image (for my Shoot-a-Month Project) we had some fun. We found a bunch of interesting, and strange, rock formations on the trial. They provided a backdrop for this gallery Dani and Cole in The North Woods Back to my Blog

Modeling Below Zero

There are two paths you can take when it is below zero in Wisconsin. You can huddle around the fire and dream of summer, or you can get off your butt and do a photo shoot! Dreamera Marie and I braved the frigid cold on a Sunny Saturday to bring a Winter fantasy to life. I bundled up and she froze! But we both had fun; hand warmers all around! You can see the full gallery at Dreamera at 14 Below Zero Check out Dreamera's Instagram @dreamera.marie or my Instagram @jalanlee I am always looking for creative projects and models…

November Film Shoot

Another session in my shoot-a-month project. This time we did a film shoot with the beautiful Dreamera Marie (Instagram @dreamera.marie). It was a beautiful late afternoon / evening and we used the backdrop of the early Winter earth tone colors around Neenah. Shot with Kodak Portra 400 film on a medium format camera - my Bronica ETRSi. The first shots were in a swamp! The rolling grasses were an awesome contrast with her sparkly blue dress. The next set was taken on Doty Island by the bridges and Fox River. This set used a variety of lighting and color grades…

Angel Shoot – Planning

Location - Downtown Neenah. Either the brick alley or trees by Neenah Towers. The final image will be a composite of two images. The first image will be made to look like a child - alone in the dark but feeling safe none the less. Below are a couple of examples of making an adult into a child. The 2nd photo is a protective angel. We'll use a back light effect. Here are a couple of examples (in the 2 locations) that kind of get to what we'll do...

Dreamera’s Circus

My 2020 shoot-a-month project continues through July. This shoot was all studio and results in a whole bunch of cool compositions. Featuring Wisconsin model Dreamera Marie, the shoot had a circus fantasy theme. We did all the shooting in front of a "green screen". This makes it possible to more easily separate the subject and composition into another picture. The downside of green screen is you run the risk of green "spill" in the picture. Spill is when you get a green color cast on the edges. It can come from bad lighting or just reflections around the set. We…

Monthly Model Shoot – Dreamera Marie

One of my plans for 2020 was to complete a monthly creative shoot. Could be a model shoot or a video shoot or anything at all. This month I worked with Dreamera Marie (Instagram @dreamera.marie). We did an evening shoot in the woods in Fox Crossing. It was a great chance to work with color, lighting and a little smoke. At least until the smoke machine plugged up! As I get older I believe more and more that God love us to create. We are an expression of that love of creation and we were made to follow the footsteps…

Let’s Get Back To Work

  • Blog

Let's get back to work! The only thing worse than being sick is being broke and sick! I am tired of being scared! What value is a life spent worrying instead of living? Life is full of risks - over 9,500 people die every day in America. But life is also full of joy and love and sharing with others. Don't give up the joy and huddle in your basement for fear of the unknown.

What do you see?

What do you see? A beautiful woman looking at a crystal ball is the first normal answer. Or maybe a tattooed model in a black dress with a crystal ball. But if you look more closely there is so much more to the picture. Start with the light. You can see purple pink light coming in from the right side. The light accents her flowered arm and her purple hair. Next her face. Her mouth is slight smiling but her eyes are not. Serious and yet a bit whimsical. It makes you wonder what is she thinking? If you look…

A Winter Night in Neenah

  • Blog

It was cold, and snowy, and dark (one of the longest nights of the year). But out we went anyway to make some beautiful portraits. I like to say every day is an adventure and this day certainly was. Jump out of the warm truck and grab some photos and then back to the warmth to thaw out my numb hands. My beautiful model didn't mind the cold at all - oh, to be young again! Technically, these are a mix of natural light portraits along with some fill light portraits with a softbox. All were taken with either a…

Alexis – Bronica Test Shoot

The first rolls of test film on the "new" Bronica came back and I am just blown away!  First, the exposures are pretty good and light meter balancing-ambiant-and-flash skills didn't fail me.  Second, both lenses are perfect.  Last, the pictures are stunning (at least to me) and have that unique medium format film "look".  While I might miss the old Kodak  the Bronica will be an amazing investment and I will have a lot of happy clients going forward. Watch for more test shoots in the future! Bronica ETRS | Zenza-Bronica 75mm f/2.8 | Kodak Portra 160 ISO Film Developing…

Playing with Fire

Another picture from the Menasha food truck event thing!  We were just laying on the grass and enjoying the music where a group of fire performers moved in.  Hot lady in more ways than one!  Just kidding! Taken with my Panasonic Lumix LX7 - a handy little camera with a great lens.  Only 10mp but who needs more.   I purposely slowed down the shutter just a bit to get some movement blur - especially the flames.  Panasonic Lumix LX7 | 17.7mm | 1/125s at f/2.3

Just Sittin’ Here

  • Blog

I'm just sitting here - enjoying the cool water!  Well, maybe not.  Given the river I don't think I would be making friends if I had actually sent her out there so this is just a composition i.e. Photoshop job!  Just 2 pictures blended together and so much fun!

Luna
Staring at the supermoon
  • Blog

Lighting, composition, compression, exposure - all part of the tool kit for any photographer.ย  The moon is one of the hardest things to photograph properly.ย  Never had a camera that could expose the moon properly - the contrast between the bright moon and the dark sky always causes an over exposure.ย  The moon is really bright and you have to adjust the exposure downward much more than you would expect! Canon 5d MkIII | Canon 70-200 f/2.8 + 2x teleconverter | 400mm | 1/200s at f/5.6
