We did a some digital portraits after a recent tintype test session. TLKonfire (also know as Tia) is a Fox Valley Wisconsin fire artist and sat for this series of impromptu portraits. We didn't really plan this set and I used a monolite strobe with a softbox to back light Tia during some fun poses. Through clever, and mostly fortuitous, manipulation of the exposure and flash level we ended up with some amazing cinematic images. Our first image, let's call it "Artist with Firefly", is an amazing silhouette of Tia with her hair and outline glowing from the light. You…
We met for a Victorian wet plate portrait session. There was beautiful sunshine all week but on the day of our studio session it was dark and rainy and cold - and Madeline was the last session of the afternoon. But we always endeavor to persevere so with some long exposure time and bit strobes we did make some beautiful glass and tin plates. For the last 10 minutes of our time we decided to do a few quick digital photos - and here they are. The photo above features Madeline in high key. It was so dark that I…
It was the one year anniversary of our per-wedding / engagement session. We met in some beautiful spots around Neenah and enjoyed some time in the warm Fall weather. The leaves were approaching their peak so we used some amazing trees for our background! It is amazing how things can change in so short a time. A year ago they were busy with plans for a wedding and their future together. So many things to decide and March was so far away. Then before you know it the wedding is over and time to start a new life together. And…
Spent a wonderful morning capturing waterfall tintype portraits with Amber. Wequiock Falls was so beautiful with just the right amount of water coming over - dramatic without being dangerous. Of course, the water was a bit chilly in the dark little gorge. But sometimes you have to suffer a little bit to make some nice images! The bulk of our time together was spent capturing some amazing Tintype 8x10's. You can see those images on my Victorian Photography website SunandSilver.photo After the tintype session we decided to have some fun with digital image. Just played around by the waterfall and…
February was blessedly warm and so we used the weather to do some portrait sessions. Here are some pictures with Nataly Divine BTS (Behind The Scenes). Nataly wore a beautiful 1920's style dress is ravishing red. This was a wet plate collodion session where we made some beautiful tintypes. Check out my 19th century photo site for the plates: sunandsilver.photo/portrait/riverside-tintypes-with-nataly/ Our first picture is a real BTS of Nataly Divine along with my Intrepid large format camera. Nataly is a true professional because she not only held this pose for the tintype but also for the digital photo. Next a…
June is almost over! Hard to believe but July is almost here and the portrait season is in full swing. This is going to be a busy Summer but I still have some time to dedicate to weddings and portraits. Contact me for more information! The portrait above was taken on my just completed road trip out west. It is always a joy to meet a beautiful young lady that has a wonderful spark of joy and happiness. That spark is the reason I so enjoy photography - it is about the people. The photos are just a part of…
When you strip away the color what are you left with? The essential character of the portrait. No more distraction, no more clutter. Just the lines and tones of your subject. The portrait above is over 100 years old and the young lady's name is a mystery. This was taken somewhere in Russia. some time around 1900. There is a depth to this picture that is haunting. Her expression, her eyes and the wisp of a smile all contribute. This hard to define quality is what I try to capture in every portrait! This portrait is very recent and I…
It is Monday morning, again, and I am having some Monday morning thinking going. So many questions in my mind. Where are you going? What's next? Should I change my career? Will I have enough money? What do I like doing and why not do more of that? I look at the picture above and my heart wants to create art. I think I managed to capture that "something" in her face and that is the reward for being a photographer. Could I do this again or was it just luck? And the biggest question is could I make a…
A face in the crowd. This is a shot from my recent shoot for "Jesus Christ Superstar" a production of the St. Timothy's Lutheran Church Players. I had the pleasure to provide photography for them again this year. They put on an awesome show and I was moved to tears in the 2nd act. This photo was taken during Jesus' trial. It shows the love and concern for Jesus on the young ladies face. Perfect lighting and perfect timing - just lucky! In some ways this shot was an accident. I usually take three lenses for the St. Tim's shoot…
