This post is another fortunate accident. Who would photograph a musical with a 100-400mm f/4 to f/5.6 Canon lens?
It is too dark!
The shutter speed needs to be too high!
ISO way beyond noisy!
Well, I did it at St. Timothy’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar and the results were excellent! I covered this in a previous post and I am still amazed at the outcome.
For years I have told people to invest in good glass and that even a modest camera body is pretty good. This picture is an example of that wisdom. The Canon 100-400 f/4-f/5.6 LII lens is a pricey beast (It pays to wait for a sale and rebates)! But wow does it deliver! Sharp, even wide open and the IS stabilization is wonderful.
Does it qualify as my favorite lens? No, I would have to say that is a tie between my 70-200mm and my 135mm. But does it qualify as “carry worthy”? I think it might – maybe I will bring it along for my next wedding. Certainly I will be doing a side by side test to compare the 100-400 to the 70-200 to see if there is an advantage to 400mm versus digitally zooming in to 400mm using the 200mm lens. Stay tuned for the answer.
Meanwhile, here are more pictures from Jesus Christ Superstar
